Could You Juggle Business Problems and Your Peritoneal Mesothelioma Recovery?

Here’s how Kasie Coleman is doing it! Having been diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma in 2010, she decided to fight the disease and subsequently went through rounds of chemotherapy, two HIPEC procedures and more. She learned that life is precious, and that it was also limited. As a result, she pursued her dream, launching her own small business. What a fun business it is, too. Cupcakes. Called Sugarbelle, she launched her second bakery in February 2014. She said that she probably would have passed on the offer, but after her cancer diagnosis, she decided to go for it. It wasn’t all clear sailing as you will see below: Opening that business — and eventually closing it after eight months — taught me valuable truths about myself and others. As a cancer survivor, wife and mother of two boys, I also learned keeping your family and your sanity is just as important as survival. Demands of Opening Another Business I doubled my staff, advertising efforts and labor when I opened the second Bundt cake bakery. Although I thought all the bases were covered, I had not counted on also doubling my own work hours. I thought hiring additional staff would decrease my work load, but it didn’t. I also learned I was more of a micromanager than I cared to admit. My days quickly turned into nights, and my children became weekend visitors. Six months into my new venture and I was physically exhausted from work, mentally drained from employee drama, and overwhelmed with the guilt of becoming an absentee parent. I would sometimes go a week without seeing my children. The daily stress was overwhelming. I also felt horrible that I was crying everyday about something I volunteered to take on. She felt that she needed to put life into perspective, and that’s exactly what she did. God had given me not one, but two chances at life, and I felt guilty about spending all my days crying my eyes out. If peritoneal mesothelioma didn’t kill me, I definitely wasn’t about to let a cupcake bakery take me out. She nearly suffered a nervous breakdown trying to deal with everything, and she wound up going to her oncologist who suggested she speak with a psychiatrist. She learned a valuable lesson when she went to her psychiatrist. It’s something that most cancer survivors must face. I was so focused on surviving during my two-year mesothelioma battle that I never dealt with the trauma of my diagnosis and possible mortality. Her second location was a rental, and the owner wound up selling the building. She had 60 days to close her second bakery. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. You know what they say: “When God closes a door, he opens a window.” And, that’s exactly what happened with Kasie. Despite all the problems of that location, the business had generated a solid customer following. That’s why I decided to wholesale my goods to retail stores and keep my original… 0

Mesothelioma Healing Miracle: It Came from the Hand of God

Mesothelioma  which is always considered malignant usually starts with something most people consider less serious. Such was the case with Leon Freitag who thought he had bronchitis, but in actuality had developed the rare cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Sufferers face a grim prognosis, and while research continues, cures are not all that common.  Leon had apparently been exposed while doing construction work as a carpenter in the 1970s. During that period deadly fibrous crystals had embedded in his lungs setting him up for problems later in life. He thought he had a stubborn case of bronchitis, but when he couldn’t make it up a staircase without stopping to catch his breath, he knew something wasn’t right. “My wife said to go to a doctor and he discovered I had mesothelioma,” says Leon Freitag, superintendent of the North Dakota district of the Assemblies of God Church. Freitag sought out the top mesothelioma doctor in the U.S., affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “He let me know there is no cure and all they can do is manage it the best they can.” Another oncologist told him the cancer was advanced – stage four – and he had a year to a year and a half to live. “I had a large tumor on top of my left lung, laying over the aorta. I had another tumor in the lower part of the lung and lesions all along the left side.” They thought the larger tumor might be growing into his aorta, which is why they ordered four chemo treatments over three months. After the oncologist delivered the grim prognosis, Freitag told him, “I feel in my heart I’m going to say to you in a few months, ‘But God…’ Read more about the mesothelioma healing miracle here.

If You Have Peritoneal Mesothelioma, Under 40 Female, Your Chances of Survival Are Higher

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have discovered that there are some distinct differences in mesothelioma among patients who are under the age of 40, which could provide some insight into better understanding of this complex disease.  In many cases, malignant mesothelioma is diagnosed in older patients who have been exposed to asbestos decades earlier in an occupational setting. However, researchers have recently isolated a smaller, younger group of patients and found some startling trends. Patients survived much longer, had a higher incidence of peritoneal mesothelioma and were more than likely female.  These findings were in stark contrast to typical mesothelioma patients. “We were surprised, really surprised at some of the things we found,” NIH Medical Oncology Branch researcher Vinay Prasad, M.D., told Asbestos.com. “You have to look at this group in a different light.” The research team used the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program database from 1999 to 2010. SEER is a National Cancer Institute program. The study, published in Oncotarget in June, included 12,345 mesothelioma patients. Two percent of those were under the age of 40 when first diagnosed. What Is Pleural Mesothelioma And How Can It Be Diagnosed?

Pleural mesothelioma is a form of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer which is usually, but not always correlated with exposure to asbestos. This form of the disease is the most common manifestation of mesothelioma, which arises in the pleura, which is the membrane surrounding the lungs; as such, it is often mistaken for lung cancer at first. While it does affect lung function once the disease advances sufficiently, it is distinct from lung cancer as it is usually thought of. Along with the pleura, mesothelioma may affect the pericardium (the membrane which surrounds the heart) and peritoneum (the membrane surrounding the organs of the abdomen). The disease is often called “asbestos lung cancer,” which isn’t entirely off base given that the disease is usually due to asbestos exposure. However, since this cancer does not originate in the lungs and as such, it is not a true lung cancer, though it can and does spread to the lungs in many cases. Pleural mesothelioma is characterized by multiple tumors on the outer surface of the pleura, though they can also appear on the inside of the pleura. Statistically, pleural mesothelioma tumors are slightly more likely to appear on the pleura near the right lung rather than the left – it is thought that this may be because of the larger size and thus larger pleural surface area of the right lung. The medical data also shows that tumors are more likely to appear near the bottom of the lung; this is due to the force of gravity, with asbestos fibers settling lower in the pleura over time. Pleural mesothelioma tends to be diagnosed only fairly late in its progression since it causes few, if any symptoms in its early stages. By the time it is detected, the tumors are generally fairly large; at this point, they may be causing reduced lung capacity or may have already metastasized to other parts of the body. It should be noted, however, that not all pleural tumors are caused by this form of cancer. Mesothelioma affecting the pleura can be difficult to diagnose, since its symptoms are similar to those of many common illnesses. These symptoms include coughing, weight loss, chest pains and shortness of breath. If you have been exposed to asbestos at any point in your life and you are experiencing any of these symptoms, see a physician as soon as possible for a thorough checkup. You could be suffering from pleural mesothelioma and not know – and as with any type of cancer, the earlier you’re diagnosed, the better your prognosis will be. New Study: Scientists Link Protein Marker with Mesothelioma Prognosis

Australian researchers say the protein Ki67 can be used to help predict survival in people suffering from malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Molecular biologists in New South Wales say a protein linked to cell proliferation could be a powerful prognostic indicator for mesothelioma. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted an article on the new research. Doctors at the University of New South Wales tested for Ki67 expression in tissue samples from 42 patients with peritoneal mesothelioma and found a direct correlation with outcomes. “High expression of Ki67 (≥25% by immunohistochemical evaluation) was correlated with poor survival in the overall group,” reports corresponding author and molecular biologist Krishna Pillai. According to the article: A cellular marker that helps tell cancer cells to replicate may be used to predict treatment outcomes in people with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. That conclusion comes from a group of researchers at Australia’s University of New South Wales. The researchers tested tissue samples from 42 mesothelioma patients for the presence of Ki67, a protein associated with cell proliferation. According to the authors, Ki67 has been widely used as a prognostic indicator in other types of cancer, but has not been tested in mesothelioma. The researchers divided the tissue samples into two groups based on their level of Ki67 expression. Those with a Ki67 expression of less than 25% were put in the low category and all samples above that were classified as high. The tissue samples were further divided into the different peritoneal mesothelioma subtypes: epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and biphasic. “High expression of Ki67 (≥25% by immunohistochemical evaluation) was correlated with poor survival in the overall group,” reports corresponding author and molecular biologist Krishna Pillai in the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. This held true in both male and female mesothelioma patients with the epithelioid subtypes. Independent of Ki67 expression, having the sarcomatoid type of mesothelioma, having a high peritoneal cancer index (a measure of the extent of peritoneal cancer) and being older than 60 were all associated with lower odds of mesothelioma survival. A Vital Mesothelioma Fund Raiser for Research

The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) hosted the third annual The Greatest Escape Motorcycle Ride, presented by Worthington and Caron, P.C., on Sunday, July 26. The event raised $88,281 for mesothelioma research, an asbestos-related cancer. The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) hosted the third annual The Greatest Escape Motorcycle Ride, presented by Worthington and Caron, P.C., on Sunday, July 26. The event raised $88,281 for mesothelioma research, an asbestos-related cancer with few treatment options. The motorcycle ride originated as a tribute to The Great Escape movie, starring actor Steve McQueen, who died of mesothelioma. Since its inception, hundreds have gathered each year to honor those who have lost the fight against mesothelioma and to raise money for research. The air was cool as the event kicked-off at the Glendale Harley-Davidson. More than 200 riders and passengers came out to enjoy a scenic ride up to Newcomb’s Ranch in La Canada, CA. The group was escorted by All Cities Transportation Company’s Escort Officers who led a safe and steady ride–with zero stops for traffic lights– through the Angeles Crest Highway with breathtaking views of Los Angeles. Riders were joined by Celebrity Grand Marshal, actor and model Fabio Lanzoni, actress Kristy Swanson, Olympic Bronze Medalist Lloyd Eisler, comedian Alonzo Bodden and actor/professor Roger McGrath, who knew Steve McQueen personally. Fabio made the perfect Grand Marshal and stopped to take pictures and converse with anyone who asked. “It was a lot of fun, great people and a worthy cause. Looking forward to seeing you again next year!” he said. Things heated up at Newcomb’s Ranch where riders were met by other supporters who don’t ride bikes, but still wanted to have fun and make a difference in mesothelioma research. Everyone enjoyed live entertainment by Cherry & the Bulldogs, a delicious BBQ lunch, craft beer by Worthy Brewing Co. (who made their CA debut at the event) and an array of vendors who offered ice cream, motorcycle gear, legal advice and back massages. Aside from supporting mesothelioma research, many riders came out to win. The opportunity drawing featured coveted prizes such as a Los Angeles Dodgers fan basket with signed memorabilia and tickets, Pro Italia motorcycle gear, a getaway to Napa, CA, dinner gift certificates, hotel stays, L.A. Racing VIP experience, concert tickets and much more. Participants came from all over California to enjoy the ride, with some traveling from as far as Texas. “Arriving from Texas to ride with folks having the same mind-set made me smile all day long. We need to keep up the fight and keep funding research!” said Mike Bittner of Worthington and Caron, P.C.,

Mesothelioma is an incurable asbestos cancer. Asbestos remains Britain's biggest workplace killer. More people die from asbestos related disease each year than on Britain's road, yet there is little government funding for medical research.
